On the other hand, the file names have legit characters and if this were electronic/magnetic corruption, the bits wouldn't necessarily conform to all valid Windows file name characters. Also, do you see the normal stuff like file sizes in the file explorer detail view? Wondering if this is a NTFS corruption, and that might mess with a lot more than the file name. How does the folder structure look? Folder names aren't really any different than file names, so if the file names corrupted, there is no good explanation of why folder names wouldn't have done the same thing. Lastly, if you happen to know the type of files that were in some of these directories, for example DOCX or XLSX files, you might try renaming a couple to those extensions and try loading them with the appropriate app to see if this is just a name issue or something worse.
Maybe using something like Macrium Reflect to get a disk-level image in case the drive is failing. If that comes up clean, the next issue is to run a backup to an external drive.

Agree with others who suggested taking the machine offline (quickly) and running deep scans below OS level. Since the files are not named with any kind of discernable pattern, it may be corruption but not necessarily of file content, but rather the names.Įither a rogue process went through and renamed files, or there is a storage device issue. I think the point some others are making is the default view in Windows is to not show extensions, and a file name like .txt is entirely legitimate, but would appear as in the view that hides the extension, while it could contain text.
